The BBC was found to have committed a "serious breach" of media regulations by failing to disclose that the narrator of a programme about the Gaza conflict was the offspring of a Hamas official, as ruled by regulatory body Ofcom.
An investigation by Ofcom into the programme Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has determined that the programme was "substantially inaccurate".
The chief executive of the broadcaster had earlier expressed regret, stating there had been "a major oversight in relation to truthfulness".
The authority has directed the corporation to air a peak-time statement about its decisions.
"Given this constitutes a major infringement of our regulations, we are ordering the corporation to broadcast a message of our findings against it on BBC Two at 9pm, with a date to be finalised," the statement read.
'Possibility to Erode Trust'
The authority's announcement said: "The inquiry we conducted found that the programme's omission to reveal that the presenter's parent held a role in the Hamas-run administration was significantly deceptive.
"It meant that the public did not have vital facts which may have been highly relevant to their evaluation of the narrator and the information he provided.
"Credibility is at the center of the bond between a media organization and its public, especially for a public service broadcaster such as the public broadcaster.
"This failing had the risk to erode the significantly high degrees of trust that viewers would have placed in a factual film from the broadcaster about the Israel-Gaza war."
The film was withdrawn from iPlayer in February after the presenter's family links came to light, and in July an corporation's own inquiry concluded it infringed the corporation's journalistic standards on factual correctness.
A corporation official commented: "The authority's determination is in agreement with the findings of the corporation's inquiry, that there was a serious error in the film in relation to the BBC's Editorial Guidelines on accuracy, which reflects clause 2.2 of Ofcom's Broadcasting Code.
"We expressed regret for this and we accept the authority's determination in its entirety. We will comply with the sanction as soon as the date and language are confirmed."
