The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
